Beyond Surveillance: How Towcester Racecourse UsesIntelligent CCTV to Power Security,
Operations and Experience
Towcester Racecourse has been rebuilt at pace – not just as a venue, but as a fully operational, secure, and connected environment. As part of this transformation, we delivered a site-wide CCTV system that goes far beyond traditional surveillance.
This is not just about recording footage – it is about understanding what is happening across the venue in real time, supporting security, improving operations, and enhancing the overall experience for guests and staff.
Understanding CCTV
Rethinking CCTV for Today’s Environments
CCTV is often seen as simple. A camera on a wall. A recorder in a cupboard. In reality, it is one of the most misunderstood systems in any building. The biggest issue is rarely the technology itself, but how systems are designed, installed, and maintained. Poor footage is often the result of incorrect placement, the wrong lens choice, or lack of maintenance – something as simple as an uncleaned lens can degrade quality over time.
At the same time, the technology has moved forward rapidly. Modern IP cameras deliver high-resolution video, strong low-light performance, and advanced image processing. Yet reliability still comes down to fundamentals. For large-scale environments, properly designed and cabled systems remain essential. Wireless solutions have their place, but robustness always comes first.

Designed With Privacy in Mind
With increased capability comes responsibility.
Modern CCTV systems must be designed with data protection in mind from the start.
Best practice is to use a rolling storage period  (typically around 30 days),  ensuring footage is available when needed, without storing unnecessary data long-term. At the same time, systems must be configured to avoid misuse, especially when using features such as facial recognition or behavioural tracking.
The goal is simple:
Capture What is Needed: Collect only the video and data necessary for security and operational purposes, ensuring the system is purpose-driven rather than overly intrusive or excessive in scope.
Protect What Matters: Safeguard recorded footage and personal data through secure storage, controlled access permissions, and encryption to prevent misuse, loss, or unauthorized viewing.
Stay Compliant: Ensure all CCTV practices align with relevant data protection regulations and privacy laws, including proper retention policies, transparent usage, and clear accountability across the system.
