The Tate Gallery, one of the world’s most iconic art institutions, wanted to push the boundaries of digital expression through a large-scale, ultra-high-definition LED installation. Partnering with AVolution, they set out to design and build a 12-metre by 4-metre LED wall capable of displaying 6K digital artworks with unmatched clarity and colour fidelity. The result is a museum-grade installation that redefines how visitors experience digital art.

Redefining Digital Storytelling in a Gallery Environment
Tate sought to create a striking visual centrepiece capable of presenting moving image artworks with cinematic depth and uncompromising colour accuracy. The display had to render even the most delicate tones and gradients exactly as the artist intended, capturing the emotional and visual impact of high-resolution digital art. Beyond visual fidelity, the installation needed to maintain complete reliability in a public setting—operating continuously with no performance degradation over time.
At the same time, the gallery required a flexible and modular system that could adapt to changing exhibition needs. The video wall had to be freestanding, while also allowing the display to be resized or reconfigured for future installations. The challenge was to deliver a solution that met the creative precision demanded by world-class artists, while ensuring it remained technically robust, scalable, and easy to manage for the gallery’s curatorial and technical teams.

The display was paired to a high-performance PC and graphics card, capable of handling uncompressed 6K content while allowing exact colour calibration throughout the workflow – from the artist studio into the exhibition space. The result is a seamless visual experience, exceeding cinematic standards while meeting the gallery’s need for absolute consistency and reliability”
Long-Lasting, Flexible Solution
Flexibility was key. The modular LED panels can be moved, resized, or reassembled for different exhibition layouts, while the glue-on-board coating ensures durability in public spaces without sacrificing clarity. Running at just 15% brightness, the installation delivers full visual impact with a lifespan of around 100,000 hours — roughly a decade of continuous use. Integrated control and audio systems allow synchronised sound and imagery at the touch of a button, transforming the gallery into a dynamic, adaptive canvas.
AVolution worked closely with the world-famous artist Do-Ho Suh to finalise the colour representation of the Video Wall, ensuring that the finished calibration exceeded every expectation the artist had.
